As of Saturday, May 14, Derek Jeter has become an official Hall of Famer, the 22nd Yankee to do so. At the Astros double-header against the Yankees, the number 2 was painted across much of the field. It was then that Jeter came out to the crowd. He delivered a speech thanking all his fans, and his plaque was revealed at Monument Park with a statue built in his name. This means that no one else can wear the number 2 jersey on the Yankees anymore, forever memorializing Jeter’s legend on the Yankees.

Now, why, you may ask, is Jeter a legend deserving of the awards he has received? Looking at Jeter’s playing over the years, he has only been shortstop for the Yankees his entire  career. This in itself is an achievement, because when a shortstop ages, the usually becomes unable to play that position and moves to the outfield. However, Jeter has been in this position into his 40s, the longest out of any Yankee. Jeter started out as a Rookie of the Year, with a good boost at the beginning of his MLB career. As he stayed with the Yankees, he was always a solid batter who had a high on-base percentage. He became captain later on, leading the Yankees to win 5 World Championships. Off the field, he always handled himself with class and not once did he have any problems with performance-boosting drugs. At the end of his career, he finished hitting a walk-off single in his final game, keeping a win-loss ratio of over 50% wins. All of these achievements provide amazing criteria for putting Jeter in the elite group of 22 other great Yankees.
