It has only been approximately fifty days since current president Donald Trump took office, and it is clear that Americans have something to say about it.  Are things actually happening at the White House?  That question is more complex than it seems; for right now the country is divided in the worst way possible, and President Trump does not appear to be doing anything to bring his citizens closer together.  The day after Trump took office, marches were arranged to protest the happenings in the country and specifically targeted improving women’s rights.  The biggest marches took place in Washington D.C. and in New York City.  In New York City, an estimated 470,000 people marched and stood up for what they believed in.  Although Americans are making their voices heard, it is up for debate whether or not the President is actually listening.

Over the past month, Donald Trump has secured many candidates for spots in his cabinet.  He appointed Steven Mnuchin as Secretary of Treasury, Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State, James Mattis as Secretary of Defense as well as many other nominees.  One of the more controversial picks was the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.  She supports charter schools and school vouchers, which some of liberals and some conservatives to do approve of.  In addition to this, it is reported that she does not have much political experience.  It is not just DeVos’s qualifications that are up for debate.  General James Mattis, the Secretary of Defense, was fired by former President Barack Obama.  He may have had good reason to do so considering some of the comments Mattis has made in the past.  The fact that he claims he does not  “lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word,” brings up some concern as to whether or not he is an expert in what he does.  Trump did work to secure his cabinet, but there is still controversy over whether the President has actually made any progress so far.

Since January 21st, Trump has signed several bills; however, not much has gone through.  He created a temporary immigration ban which inconvenienced many people in travel at the time.  He claimed that it was not discriminating against anyone, even though it was a territory ban.  This ban had many minorities and immigrants worried for their future.  Ultimately, civil rights lawyers fought the ban and it did not last very long after that.  This was an eye opening experience for America, for it is now clear that Trump may actually act upon the things he advertised in his campaign.

Overall, it is safe to say that the country has very different beliefs at the moment.  Some think that President Trump is doing a great job, while others disagree.  He has made some controversial cabinet picks as well as debatable decisions in the past fifty days, so it is no surprise that Americans are reacting.  The women’s marches are a perfect example of Americans opening up about their beliefs.  It is important that unhappy citizens express their opinions in unfair situations and stand up for what they believe in.
