Athletic motivation is a hard concept, especially when the end goal isn’t immediate. Summer’s happy-go-lucky, slow-moving vibes can dilute its effects and, as a result, your abilities. Here are some tips to rock your pre-season and stay in shape:

  • Keep a schedule (set a goal!)

Specifically plan out your daily workouts/court sessions/pass-arounds in a notebook, calendar, or on your phone (setting reminders is a good idea). Goals are crucial to the overall process; knowing where you want to be in itself might keep you consistent. Do research for your sport (look up common exercises, methods, programs, etc.) before creating your plan to help you achieve your desired athletic state in the three-ish summer months.

  • Create a reward system

It’s going to be difficult to stick to the plan if you don’t incentivize! Resolutions like “No Netflix until I run five miles!” will not only encourage you to actually run those five miles but will also give a sense of meaning to whatever activity serves as your lure. A cupcake tastes better if you earn it.

  • Do it with friends

Whether competitive or not, bringing a couple teammates along has definite personal and collective benefits. Team bonding is inevitable of physical training; help each other improve with support and standardization. But the ‘group’ part isn’t necessary if you prefer. Offer opinions and trade suggestions from afar if you’re focused on the individual element of training.

  • Stay in contact with your coach

Where online programs and personal reflections fail, your coach will have some advice. Ask for insight from the person who knows you and your sport. In doing so you’ll also have established yourself as one who cares about the team and personal betterment.

  • Attend a summer camp

Spending a couple hours surrounded by people of equal talent and motivation is an essential athletic experience. Chances are you’ll be among competition if you go local; build a name for yourself.
